Obama Displays Lack of “Intelligence”

panettaBarack Obama’s recent slew of appointments to various positions in his adminstartion has been a mixed bag to say the least. Some selections have been spot-on, and others a little surprising. Nonetheless, most of us Obama supporters have trusted his judgment thus far. But appointing Leon Panetta as Director of the  CIA would be gross negligence on the part of the President Elect. The former congressman and White House Chief of Staff  is a notable statesman, with a long history of serving his country, but I think it’s completely INSANE that he should lead the most powerful intelligence agency in the world. Appointing someone with absolutely ZERO INTELLIGENCE EXPERIENCE to head the Central INTELLIGENCE Agency is total madness. It’s like hiring a lawyer to be your doctor, or bringing in an accountant to be the White House chef.

The rationale is clearly political. Most people qualified to run the CIA are tainted by the Agency’s inexcusable incarceration and interrogation practices during the Bush Administration. But selecting an outsider to clean up the mess is a terrible idea. This isn’t a public relations matter, this is about the safety of our country. America needs to be fighting smarter wars. We’ve been bumbling around the world  pissing away resources, when we should be concentrating on gathering better actionable intelligence, and making  more informed decisions based on it . The CIA needs a savvy insider to take care of this, not an aging congressman.

Since the establishment of the Church Committee in 1975, congress has taken it upon itself to be the watchdog of the United States intelligence community. This sort of oversight has given us a keener understanding of the CIA’s practices, and congress should continue to vie for this sort of transperancy. However, putting a former congressman in charge of the CIA is an example of letting a hen watch the hen house.
